Tory Brown, Sales Associate

Tory headshotVictoria “Tory” Brown, born in New York City, first came to the Florida Keys as a child on family Christmas trips. They had vacation rentals in Buttonwood Bay, Key Colony Beach and Key West during the 1970s.
She remembers her father driving over the old 7-mile bridge, exiting down onto Pigeon Key, which was a scenic stop on the Overseas Highway back then. As a college student in D.C., she drove to Key West with a group of friends in a big RV and still remembers how scary crossing the old bridge was.
Tory earned her BA in English Literature at George Washington University and began her career in publishing at Murdoch Magazines, a division of NewsAmerica. She bought a house in the D.C. suburb Riverdale, MD, but many blizzards later, a chance opportunity to go on a Key West fishing trip in 1990 would change her life.
On a lark, she interviewed with the publisher of the local weekly newspaper Island Life, was offered the job and made the decision to move to Key West. After years of visiting, the move seemed like a natural one.
Later as an editor of the Key West Citizen, Monroe County’s only daily newspaper, Tory’s witnessed and wrote about the growth and change in the Keys. She left for only two years; spent one in Arizona at the flagship paper of the Citizen’s parent company, Thompson Newspapers. Desert living was not to her liking however and Tory headed west to California’s coastal area of Morro Bay as a reporter for the San Luis Obispo Tribune.
With her aging parents on the East coast, she returned to Florida in 2001 and made Marathon her home. A history buff, she gave tours of Pigeon Key and drove tourists across the old bridge in the little tram. She thought of the family trips she says, and It was a full circle moment she treasures.
Getting her Florida real estate license was another such moment. With her love and knowledge of the Keys, it seemed another natural move. As did  joining CocoPlum Real Estate and Vacation Rentals. “Our family always stayed in vacation rentals,” Tory remembers. “It’s part of what made it seem like home even back then. And that’s special.”
